SCENARIO
Setting: A comprehensive university with a large number of transfer students where undergraduate education is emphasized.
Role: You’re an instruction librarian trying to improve your students’ learning outcomes related to using research in their papers.
Problem: Conversations with faculty have highlighted the ongoing challenge of getting students not just to identify but to also synthesize and analyze the scholarly sources their professors require them to use in their research papers. The professors are frustrated with the students’ work. The students seem like they can find scholarly, peer reviewed materials on their topics, but have difficulty integrating the scholarly literature into their own arguments. How can you describe what’s going on so you can discuss it with interested faculty members? How will understanding a little more about how students use the reseach they find inform your instruction sessions?
